Hi all, Just trying to find some information that the internet is silent on. I have come across Day's patent underhammer percussion cane guns and was trying to find out how the underhammer mechanism he used works. Anyone have one that they can dismantle for me and show with pictures, or sketch. Anyone familiar with this action type that can describe it? I am interested in making a smoothbore (whether screw barrel or muzzleloading, not sure yet) with the same action as Day's, as it is nice and slim. I am not interested in any other underhammer style action. This style will work best and has a flip down trigger.
Attached photos are for reference to what I am talking about.

Thanks

Looked up Day's patent underhammer and came up with various auction sites that shows them. one had a pretty good look at the underbelly
of one as it was cocked. Pretty sure I could make a version??? just based on that..

Simple really in my version, the hammer is driven by an internal mainspring,( either with a link or the hammer having a roller) and applies power in a downward motion. the trigger only drops enough so it upper end engages in a notch on the rear underside of the hammer.. < think simple lever> I believe the hammer as it falls also retracts the trigger by pushing the forward end of it down as the hammer rotates to fire the cap?. there may be a light 'feather spring" than rides along with the mainspring < same screw > and only has enough push to move the trigger into the cocked position...
doubt its a target trigger :p just enough to get the job done I'd expect?

easy as that?? main constraint for me is I have no idea of the diameter of the cane in that area.. given a diameter I could the machine it all to fit??
Or so my ego says I could!! 🤔

I spent over an hour and a half searching various ways to try and find something? to no avail...
just because I'm now curious as to how close my idea might be :dunno::)

I have looked all over and tried to search the patent and still nothing. That is why now I must ask those who have maybe hands on experience. I agree it must be simple, but want to get as close as I can without reinventing the wheel.
