for those of you in need of lead, ive found a decent deal on ebay. its 12.75 per 15 pounds but it looks like hes onley got 90 pounds left. i bought 60 pounds for $63 shipped.

since im sure im not allowed to link it. go to ebay and search:

Lead Ingots SOFT lead

it will be the one that lists em at 12.75.

Good to know.........thanks!

A good source for #1 best lead are places that make stained glass.
The lead framing that they use is great.
They often have buckets of twisted bent and off cuts.
Underground wireing companies often have lead sheilding, which is great also.
Another source is metal roofing companies.

Be wary of Fleabay, you never know what they are selling as soft lead. It may be a mix and it maybe wheel weights! :shake:

If you know and trust the seller that's one thing but there are a lot of unscrupulous folks out there!

So what's wrong with wheel weights?

The lead itself never engages the rifling directly with a PRB anyway, and it doesn't deform upon firing to engage it either, unlike a Minie or Maxi.

Thanks for the tip. Just got home with 70 pounds at .75 lb from my local stain glass shop

Wheel weights are fine, as long as you don't mind "hard lead" that contains other metals.

If you're using a tight patch and ball combo you will really tell the difference loading balls made with wheel weights, same goes for C&B Revolvers. Otherwise they seem to shoot as well as soft lead.

if the lead turns out hard, ill simply use it in my smooth bore musket. my 71 cal musket eats lead like its goen outa style. a day at the range can easily eat around 3 pounds of lead (balls weigh in at 1.1 oz).

i do need to call around to local stained glass shops and roofing companies to see if i can find a more permanent source of lead.

Most of the lead on ebay is wheel weight. To me wheel weight is not worth much at all. In fact I will not buy it because of the potential of Zinc in the lead from someone that doesn't know better or is melting it and selling zinc to make a buck. Zinc in lead is not worth having. I have made fishing sinkers with zinc and zinc poisoned lead. I bought lead from ebay once. The seller said it was pure soft lead. I tested it a 22 BHN. For those that don't know 5 BHN is soft. Ron

If indeed it is pure lead thats a pretty fair price and I am amazed that the shipping is that cheap. Geo. T.

lead is easy to ship, people use USPS flat rate boxes to ship up to around 65 pounds for $12.

as far as how soft the lead is. if i can scratch the lead with my finger nail its good enough for me.

The only way I buy lead on e-bay is in the form of sheet lead, then I know it is unmolested and still soft.

Anything else is a crap shoot.

A really good test for hard/soft lead is to drop it from hip height onto a concrete floor, hard lead rings, soft lead thuds.
