Decent set of carving chisels??

I have a cheap china set that I have played with for years, but I am ready to step up. Was looking at a set of Pfiel chisels from woodcraft.

First, thoughts on them as a brand?

For stock carving, would you get an 8 or 10 piece set, or pick individual chisels??

Any input appreciated!!

All brands will need to be stropped or even sharpened when you receive them to get the most out of them - even Pfeil . As others have said buy individual chisels as you need them. I'd also look at flea markets and yard sales - there are a lot of GOOD old chisels out there. A lot of "hardware store" brand chisels were made by top brand manufactures and stamped with the hardware store chain name such as Montgomery Wards, Craftsman, and others.

I agree with others about sets, don't bother with them.

Pfeil are top quality. I started with a couple small straight chisels and a couple small gouges and added more as I learned.

Narex makes some pretty decent straight chisels and they are inexpensive.

about 60 years ago my grandma told me. "if the knife isn't sharp when you buy it, it will never be able to hold an edge".
I know we are talking about chisels and that times have changed but i would still be thinking of what she said.

Talk to some of the men and ladies use, you really dont need a set, ask what everybody are using go to search and look up stock carving.

Narex makes great chisels, they also make carving chisels, I have a set of German made Lamp Brand chisels my bride got me 16 or so years ago from Woodcarvers supply that have served me well and hold an edge. Schaaf makes a good mid priced chisel also, I have a couple of those too.

I started buying Flexcut carving tools. Razor sharp right out of the box. They even send band-aids with them. Yeah, they really do that.
