Earlier this week I went into an antique gun shop in Virginia to get my Grandfather a Pedersoli Mortimer Rifle. I was going to get one for myself but there was only one left. While the owner was in the back looking for the rifle I found two original Jaeger Rifles hanging up on the wall. One was a .58 caliber 30 5/8 Barrel made in Suhl Germany in 1830 and the other was a .62 caliber 32 1/2 barrel made in Austria in 1832. There were no prices listed as the owner hadn't listed them yet but he said he would call and let me know. What is the better rifle ? I can't really make a decision on which to buy so I come here for some opinions. Thank you to all who reply.

Which of those two Jeager rifles would be the better one? I really can't tell you anything unless evaluated in person. What's the condition of the barrel? What's the condition of the lock and triggers? Any cracks in the wood? Are either of them loaded?

Just not enough information to form an opinion.

Like he says/ But pics would help but in the end its your taste that should be your guide. I have shot a original govt jager rifle for many years. but the shooting such like its disposable is or should be a concern . I found mine was one of Prince Eugenes 1,012 rifle regiment made c 1800. 6 like it remain in the RA collection s Iv'e made some new ones an retired it . New ones are made to be well used its demise if really well used its its glory . While shooting original is against preservation .generally speaking ..Just my views .

I've fired rifles in both those calibers and just from a comfort point of view the .58 would be better. A buddy of mine bought a reproduction .62 Jeager for post shoots and with a heavy load, that thing was a beast.

Neither are loaded, wood is in good condition with some handling wear and the barrels are typical of a 190 year old rifle, bores looked decent and triggers seemed fine both have set triggers. I can't take any pictures because the shop owner doesn't allow pictures of his merchandise taken. They both equal in my opinion.
