Awhile back someone was thinking of doing a Deer Creek Northwest rifle kit. The one thats a clone of old CVA Mountain rifle. Has there been any progress in that area? I've been eyeballin' one of those kits for a while and was wondering if it would be worth the money and effort to build one for a beat the heck outta kinda gun.

It isnt for the beginer, a hand full of getting this to match that, but I do love the way the 54 shoots and looks now, I Hawken cloned it with other parts, for 200 it was worth it to me but thats me.

Well a little metalfitting doesn't scare me, seems alot of old CVA parts like locks should interchange with this kit. Figure it might be worth a try after hunting season.

That was the main thing, the trigger bar isnt long enough to use on none set trigger, that was the biggie, I use the set trigger so no big deal to me might be for some one else. The rest of it was like putting any CVA rifle together,if youv done one you done them all I guess. For 200 I couldnt complain, spent maybe 2 hours a day for 5 days on it and it looked more like a Hawken than GP rifle does to me.

FW, you must have gotten yours awhile back or found a better deal than I've located. On GunBroker the asking price is $238. I've been scouring the sites for an early model CVA Big Bore Mountain rifle with no luck plenty of .50 cals though no .54s. Figure on Ebay there are plenty of CVA parts floating around including set triggers and such, plus got some CVA parts here at home. Just wish I had a CVA replacement parts list to see just what would interchange.

Could you post a pic of what your gun looks like now? I'm curious to see how it came out.

I could be wrong I thought the Deer Creek rifle and the Northwest was the same except for trim you can get those thru Deer Creek for 199. I would love to post pics I dont know how this is my kids rig I just get to use it when hes not around, he doesnt know how to get the pics from hard disk to here, but hes working on it. All I really did was get Dixies Hawken parts nose cap ect I had a real trigger guard on a flintlock thats been sitting here, cut the forearm back about 1 1/2" put the Hawken nose on, was no big deal. The 54 really shoots right on and thats all I was after I dont like the GPRs everyone has one and I dont like the stock drop, to much for me the DCs are more like T/Cs /Armsports Ect a 1" higher. hope that helps DCs # 765 525 6181.

I think they are the same rifle with nickel silver trim on one and iron on the other. Here's a link to one that I built

I was looking for that site to tell you about, my rifle looks a bit differnt,so you should ask about are the locks the same ect on the 2 they sell now. I didnt lap mine but did change the front sight to a thicker one for old eyes and it shoots the same at 50 yds.For 200 its hard to go wrong. Fred

Nemesis of Marmots,

That is a CVA Mountain Rifle and was my first ML that I bought in 1977 in .50 caliber. I sold it and got a Big Bore Mt. Rifle in .54 and the main difference is a 1" barrel and lack of a patchbox. :hmm:

Basically the Deer Creek Northwest is just the CVA Mountain Rifle. If I'm not mistaken Deer Creek bought the machinery from Douglas that was used to make the barrels for the CVA version.

It was the trigger guard that threw me, its not like the post, and my forearm looked longer,if you look in the catlog the stocks from wrist back look a bit different. I have 5 rifles with DC made barrels every one of them will put RBs on the bull, touching at 50 yds (as far as Ive benched them all) they still got that Douglas rifleing mch, my oldst Mowrey is near worn out the hammer hole is worn so you can move the hammer a little up or down I dont know how many 1000s of shots I put thru it RBs and REALs 50s and its still dead on and the first one Id take to hunt what ever.Hope that helps. Fred
