Taking one with a flinter has got to be the ultimate thrill. I'll be trying for that myself, next year. Congrats!

Thanks Plink. :)
She must of had her leg back, the ball shattered the elbow on the way in. Ball was just under the hide on the far side.
Looks to me like it did what it was supposed to do but i can see why you would want a hard ball for bigger game and bone busting.

Great pictures, Pitchypine, for those shooters who have never recovered a spent round ball after it has killed a deer. This shows how it flattens and expands on impact. And, you are right about using an alloy ball for heavy-boned game. ( or, if your rifle will shoot them, use the conicals.)

The main difference you will see when you recover an alloy round ball( if it doesn't complete penetrate and get lost in the background) is that it won't flatten as much, and because it is an alloy, and not as soft and maleable, the edges of the ball will have splits, or cracks.

Congratulations PitchyPine. As Hannible Smith on the A Team TV show said, "I love it when a plan comes together."

What caliber is your flintlock rifle? I can't tell for sure, but the rifle resembles a Pedersoli? Am I correct?

Thanks,
Flint Hunter
