I guess I'll stick with the soap method for the six deer hides my son and I got this year (three deer each but my three weighed the most).

I used to think that it was not a traditional method until I happened to read in the the Journals of Lewis and Clark that they used soap.

The passage went something like, "The trees here do not leave ashes when they are burnt so our men can't drip lye to make soap for tanning their skins."
