well i finally got brave enough to sand down the stock and stain it with reddish-brown stain. i put a few coats of true-oil on it as a finish. then i thought that putting my old scope wouldnt be bad to put on it so i did that as well. i got it adjusted by the sear so the trigger is nice and crisp. I got it sighted in today with roundballs. will try conicals some other time.

That is an awfully big scope. :rotf:

Just curious as to what kind of groups you're getting, and at what range. I once thought about scoping one of my daughter's rifles, since she is not interested in the traditional aspect of muzzleloading. She does fine with open sights, so I never mounted the scope, but certainly not above doing it for someone who wants it.

Nice job BTW. Bill

Looks good! The scope is a nice touch too, they had them in the mid 1860s so thats fine for it.

I don't think that will past the HC - PC test  But I would'nt think at your age you would need a scope, now me with my bad eyes, bad back and trembling arms might need one! :( :haha: BTW the stock looks good thats a nice stain color, good job!

I've got one of those in need of refinishing, but have been avoiding it because I wasn't sure the light stock would take stain well. Yours looks great! What make of stain did you use?

It doesn't have to “take stain well”, if you tint your tung oil. Go for it!

BB, I revamped a T/C and a CVA pistol. I used some natural walnut husk stain on the T/C that I had made up several years ago. Seemed to stain the beech wood quite nicely.

From a deer hunting perspective I think the scope would be used more for a low light situation vs getting added range out of the muzzleloader. This is my first traditional only deer season and I have missed my old Swarovski! I have been getting down out of my stand about 10-15 minutes before end of legal shooting time...I cant see the painted on front sight of my "Hawken"!

hey brown bear good to see you again. on these
hardwood stocks i have had good luck with the
alcohol based leather stains. they soak in real
well and leave a pretty even color. and there
is an endless supply of colors. good hunting & God bless
