You guys are right, this is a great site. More expensive than the budget I have. A very nice, site.

Gives me some ideas about what I would like to do.

There has to be some innovations that made particular designs more popular, and this may be more to what I was after what do you consider when you look at the design of a gun? What are the specifications that you would look at if you were looking at for example a hawken or a kentucky rifle. You know basic design points that would make one model or brand better than another? I know this is basic but I am curious about what others consider

I bow to your wisdom

:master:

I lean towards flintlocks, I just love them...

And large bores too, the bigger the better, oh, and long barrels as well...

Flintlocks became more popular than Matchlocks, Percussion replaced the Flintlock, cartridge guns replaced the percussion cap, repeating arms replaced the single shot, etc,, etc., etc. Better design always becomes more "popular".

What do you mean by design? (see above answer)

"Design" and "style" can be two completely different things. When you say "Style" and "Design" do you mean the "look" or physical function of the weapon?

Many people choose their weapons based on their persona, which means you are limited to a period in history from which to choose your design/style.

What you need the weapon for will determine your design and style. This whole exercise might be easier if you narrow your question to something specific.

Maybe you should look at lots of guns until you see one that makes you drool. If it isn't a sidelock flinter you can buy one of them later ::

Technut's said.

BTW, I am going to buy the Hawken," "Unless I see a better one before I get to the store."
" well at least for the ones I can afford."  !!!
:applause: Good first choice! Really!

Another one smitten with "BP Fever"!! Tech', How's the house payment going? Can you afford a second morgage? Aww heck,,just sell the place!! Buy a truck and good tent! and a stove, gonna need good stove!
Be fore-warned. Thar is no cure,,,,,

Honest, fer what we spoke of Saturday,,,if you hang with this crowd you'll do fine. Your kit is/will be worth all you paid, and a fine shooter too. You got a "ton" of guys right here that'll walk you through every step!

"...You got a "ton" of guys right here that'll walk you through every step! "

Ah'm a bettin that includes Sumtacks too! :)

Just Jim, You took the words out of my mouth. Plus all of the schools. Lancasters, York, Reading, Bethleham, etc. You also have cast off, cast in, drop.
And remember there is nothing worse then a ill fittin rifle unless it is 2 of them.

Any way as was said find what you like and go from that point.

Lots of good books out there, that can help ye out!

Pick'n a muzzleloader is 'bout tha same as pick'n a women.

If one catchs yore eye, and feels good in yore arms,..... thets tha "one" fer you. 'Course the best thang 'bout muzzleloaders is, they don't git jealous of one 'nuther, so you can have lots of'em without a big fight and broke'n furniture. :: :D

I like that! And, I think it's very true.
Thankfully, we all don't prefer "chocolate" ice-cream, and "one man's junk, is another man's treasure".
So, after all the advice available is summed up, YOU are still the one that makes the decision.

You just may end up making several such decisions, but no matter, they will still be your own, and each will be a bit better than the last...in your mind. And that is as it should be.

Zonie has made a couple VERY good posts regarding this, and I think even humble Jim will have to say, It's all in YOUR eyes, YOUR hands, and in YOUR mind.

Triphammer

Just got back from a week at the Big Muddy in Winona. Had an absolute blast! Send either Technutz or myself a PM when your rifle arrives. Would like to see it by you or if you want to shoot it, let me know, I have a backyard range. I may be able to arrange for another Bess to be here.
