I'm betting a great many here started out with one

of these:

Do I sense some apprehension from the yard frog? Maybe he thinks he will be the test subject…..

Yard frog would make a great target! But my wife has told me "oh no you don't!!" 😂

So I will be using some card board squirrel silhouettes I traced out from a steel target.

Starting load to try is 60 gr Sheutzen re-enactor powder with 7/8ths ounce #5 lead shot. I will be using corn meal as a over powder wad, and crumpled wax paper for an overshot card. Pretty basic stuff.

Just looking for a small game BP gun on the cheap, and enjoyment.

Let’s see pictures of the patterns your shooting.

First outing with gun, 60 grains by volume Graf's re-enactor powder, 7/8 ounce #5. Shot at 15, 20, and 25 yards. Seems to shoot low. I shot 11 times, no cleaning. Even at 8 yards, was opening quickly. Had a great time on the farm! So relaxing!!

Trying #6 shot next time.

I see dead squirrels . You might need to see a bit of barrel under the bead before firing to bring POI up to POA.

Tim what did you use for wads and shot size you used.thanks
i have the full stock you showed and I get a good pattern to 20 yards
with powder nitro card shot the over shot card.powder is 35 grains of 2 f!
60 grains equal shot (7 1/2 shot ).My 28 gauges don’t seem to like the bigger shot.

Walt

I was trying 7/8oz 5 shot, my load was pretty simple and cheap.

60 grains re-enactor powder (Graf's)
7/8 oz dipper of corn meal on top of that.
7/8 oz #5 shot.
Crumpled wax paper, maybe 6" by 4" to hold everything in place.

Very enjoyable, but I do want to try other powder and shot size before squirrel season. Bout a month and a half away yet here in Iowa.
