Did some scouting this weekend

Just thought I would share some photos from my scouting/backpacking trip. Just me and the dog and my thoughts from Friday morning to Monday afternoon. Since our usual spot is still burning with no end in sight, this trip was all about securing a reasonable back up plan for Colorado's muzzleloader season in September, which I think was a success. Even managed to stumble upon a couple elk.

Great looking country but too high for me if there's still snow on the ground in the middle of July.

Question: Is the fish shown in one of your photos a golden trout?

and btw IMHO snow on the ground in July is a necessity for a paradise like hunting ground :grin:

Now that's a real hunt. Don't even need a gun to have the time of your life in such a place. It's the country that keeps me going back more than the animals, and from your pics I'm guessing the same for you. Thanks for taking us along on your hunt...er...scout! :applause:

The elevation at camp is ~11,500 ft and the ridge with the snow bank is almost 12,000.

I completely agree with azmntman on snow through the summer. It's especially important in exceptionally dry years such as this. That snow bank will keep that valley lush and green all season. A grassy ridge with a large snow bank is actually the first thing I look for in an early season hunting spot.

Question: Would it be out of bounds for the site to drop a tip about finding such places with the help of some very futuristic technology?

Absolutely right BrownBear!! By the third night I usually start wondering if it would be possible to convince my wife to start a family homestead up there! :haha:

I get altitude sickness above 11,000' but I might risk it to catch a golden trout.
