I will try this again. Totally confused myself rereading my post.

I was shooting reenactor grade bp. 65 grn. 480 ball& .015 patch.
I have a Springfield 63 58 cal., a 58 Remington .44 cal, and a.50 t/c hawken.
I would like to shoot only one powder. I would like to shoot 3 fg Schuetzen.
What would a good load for these weapons.

Dan

I did work up a load that I liked for the hawken I liked.

65grn reenact or 480 ball .015 patch.

Wow, did you open a can of worms...
first, I use fffg cause a friend bought me 5 lbs of it at the NSSA shoot at Winchester. He said most competitors there use fffg cause they get more shots per pound.
My Lyman BP manual shows over their chrono a 100gr load of fffg was equal to 140gr of ffg, which I think is a 40% difference, or close to it.
Sooooo, according their data, a 60gr charge of fffg is equal to a 84gr ffg. They measured velocities from 40grs to 180grs in a 54 caliber of both ffg and fffg. As far as I can tell their data shows a charge of fffg is equal to a 40% heavier charge of ffg.
I have a chrono, and have tried to check my bp loads, but I have had trouble getting accurate reading due to the smoke, or something.

As far as what loads to use in the guns you listed, there are too many variables to start to answer that. Are you shooting conicals or RB in your revolvers, Minnie or PRB in your musket, same for the hawken?

BTW, if your musket has shallow rifling like most muskets do, then it was made for minie balls and getting it to shoot accurate with PRB will be a challenge.

Good luck, I'm sure a flurry of response if forthcoming.

It's commonly rumored that schuetzen powder is more powerful than goex. Possibly due to the powder burning more cleanly.

That being said, I'd go down another 10%.

I shoot a flintlocks, so peak pressures are less than caplocks doe to the lack of a significant sized vent.

I shoot 70 to 90 grain loads of FFFg goex in them.

Many are weary of advising a load in other's guns.

However, the pistol and thompson center gun has advertised loads in their manuals.

I have good luck and little fuss with goex. It's a good bit cheaper, however you and I live in NY. so, availability is tougher.

My guess would be 20grs in the pistol, 55 in the thompson, and I personally might be a bit weary of using it in the 58. I'm not familiar with that particular make or any issues.

You also didn't state what you're using these guns for. Casual target shooting, competition, hunting, etc. competition and hunting you may want a more stout load.

I got a 36" 45 cal caplock that I only shoot 40grs of FFFg goex it. It does well.

With the 58, I'd do a mild load in 3f If I felt comfortable with the gun. something in the line of 55 to 60grs. You could still harvest a deer just fine at 50 to 70 yards.

The added plus of mild loads is that it's easy on the tang inlet and of course you.....

My use disproves that rumor, as either shoots to the same point of aim better than I can hold. I've used both through the years, up to 8-pounds in a 'good year'.

Schuetzen used to be my 'go to' powder for competitions and I did find it burned cleaner, but I recently switched back to Goex to support American jobs.
