Hi Britsmoothy does Jess give you the look my beagle used to give me when I missed the rabbit. He would run it by three times and if you missed that many times he just sat there giving me the I would of done better myself.

Looks like another great day afield for man and dog! Rabbit stew is always a winner with my clan. For what it's worth, my grandfather swore that apple cider vinegar mixed into a glass of water twice a day cured gout.

I had a Brittany Spaniel years ago that would allow one miss on bobwhites. If I missed again all day - that dog would stop and cut me a look that spoke volumes. Yes, I would feel much chagrin and humiliation...
As a By God Mountain man I went on a trek. Going to live off the land. Had a little ten pound mixed breed dog with me.
Some times real life Mountain men go hungry, and I did for two days.
After noon on the second day I got my a rabbit. Looking forward to a meal and so was ‘Dawg’.
Opened the rabbit and it was all full of worms, I’m not that hungry, Dawg is.
How do I keep Dawg away from it? I walk down to the river, a branch of the Colorado, and toss it in.
Dawg dancing around my feet on the trip down.
The look on his face when I threw a meal away haunts me yet.
I did make it up to him later, but don’t know if he ever forgave me

I had quite a few Brits until the quail disappeared. Loved them all. Got a Boykin and used her (key word) for everything from ducks to deer. Fabulous dog!
She never gave me the stink eye for any reason. I sure miss them all.
I'm tearing up right now just thinking about them. 😢 I'm sure that Nate tears up about Tia now and then.

A fellow I hunted with had an interesting bird dog - just happened to also be a Brittany Spaniel. This dog would bite the head off a quail and eat it when it got hungry. I never saw it leave a mark on the body of the quail though - never. It would retrieve that headless bird in perfect style and go on hunting. Dogs are smart.

They sure work their way into your heart. That's for sure.

nice rabbit brit, looks to me like a chicken fried rabbit with fried potatoes and rabbit gravey, with cats head biscuits sweet butter and to keep the wifey happy grilled asparagus. Maybe sneak in a pint on the side.

You put 3/4 the volume you would with 3f or larger and enjoy the efficiency my friend. Don't forget to plug the vent on a flintlock though before charging. Or if cap lock keep the hammer on the nipple, no point wasting none.
2/12 as against 23/4s in my 12's or 16's Keep the hammer down and self prime (If your on your own with a good Hound like your's) in the field.. O.D.
As for dorgies I bred Black labs with the odd accidentlal yeller for 45 years under GREENSWYLDE. Nevere realy trialed,to insestuus, but always good picking up Dogs and *******.
Then came the Liver Curly Coated Retriever Bitch.Curlew Over G--de. Curlywig,Wig for short.. Never buy a Curly--they grow on you (ask Feltwad). Total imbasile that loved life and work and the Labs.. The big "C" got at her at 7.. Much missed as are all the GREENSWYLDE Labs. No one wants to let an old man have a young dog as it might out live him ..OLD DOG..

After shooting the other day I didn't clean the 45.
I've quit panicking about cleaning muzzloaders, unless they get wet I don't worry.
Today I wanted another rabbit so I popped a cap on a rodded patch and set off.
I want to say it was a long shot but the first rabbit I got a chance at was only 10yds or so. Never look a gift horse in the mouth I took the shot.
