Friends, our 2nd Amendment rights are always under attack and the NRA has been a constant for decades in helping fight that fight.
We have partnered with the NRA to offer you a discount on membership and Muzzleloading Forum gets a small percentage too of each membership, so you are supporting both the NRA and us.
I think the Charlevilles are/were 69 cal, which is a 14 ga, but I'm not familiar with the Japanese model. However, the Miroku made pieces are/were high quality, but again, I'm not personally familiar with the Japanese Charleville.
I've had my eye out for one of those for a while. I've got a Miroku Brown Bess, model 1861 and a model 1863 Springfield. I'd like to have a Miroku Charly to round out my collection. I think you'll be very pleased with it.
75 cal is an 11 ga, a 12 ga is .729 cal. Are you sure it isn't a misidentified Jap Bess? The Jap bess was made in 75 cal. Or, it is possible that the current owner has misidentified the bore diameter.
I have never heard of a Charleville in any cal, other than 69, so something sounds a little off; suspicious, if you will, about this piece. I would look it over VERY closely, Check the barrel and find out what it is made of. If DOM tubing, run away, fast.
This apparently is a used piece, so I suggest that you ask the current owner if you can mic the bore, or better yet, shoot it to make sure it works, not to mention to see if you can handle the recoil of a 11 or 12 ga full house loads, in the Charleville stock configuration.
After questioning the owner, he said it is indeed a 69.cal, he got it confused with his bess. So now that is straight how are the japenese charleville as far as compared to other imports, such as pedersoli?
You'll probably need to ask the question on the Rev War list to find folks who use them regularly. As I mentioned, I don't have one, but do have 3 other Japanese made muskets - Brown Bess, M1861 and M1863 springfields. All are of very good quality with forged lock parts and overall weight much closer to original than anything out of Italy. I suspect the Charly will be of similar quality. The only downside is a lack of Japanese spare parts. But in some cases, other repro parts can be made to fit.
