Dixon's Muzzleloading Shop

[Seeking Trad Deer]

Being a Pennsylvanian I have been lucky over the years to have such a great resource with the largest Muzzleloading shop in the world, Dixons, a half hour drive from my house. I probably wouldn't have been introduced to this sport if it weren't for this shop. Well I was there tonight getting a fiber optic front site and some do dads I needed to pick up. It dawned on me that Chuck Dixon is now 71 and has a lifetime of knowledge in that head. He will probably take it with him when he goes. So if you are in the neighborhood take the opportunity to stop in and listen and learn to this wonderful resource we have in the muzzleloading community. :hatsoff:

I live at the Raritan Bayfront in South Amboy NJ. I consider Chuck to be the "Guru" of BP. I bought two Trade Rifles from him, powder, patches, balls, you name it. A nicer person in a retail setting can't be found. He and Gregg are the most knowledgable people I know in the field of BP. I go there every chance I get. They're only 11 miles away from Cabela's. Last time I was there, I had the Wife drop me off at Chuck's and she went over to the winery :shocked2: . I'll add more about my friends tomorrow :thumbsup: . All the best, Dave

Dave, I also live in NJ and Dixon's is my first stop on the way to Cabelas.

If anyone is planning a trip out for the first time, try to plan for the last weekend in July. Dixon has it's annual Gun Makers Fair. Great time lots of vendors! :thumbsup:

You sure are right on, there, STD! Chuck & Greg were a great help to me a few years ago starting out shooting BP - they still are, for that matter. Like a lot of the "seasoned" BP veterans on this forum, they never tire of answering the "basics" for greenhorns. Chuck has a "handout" that he wrote and gives to anyone starting out. I'm also about a half hour from their shop and get over there an average of once a month. When I hear guys on the forum say how difficult it is for them to get black powder, it makes me remember what a blessing it is to have Dixon's so close! :thumbsup:

Is Dixon's larger than Dixie Gun Works? I have not been lucky enough to get to either. Has anyone been to both?

Yep...Dixon's is a great resource. It's my first stop also on the way to Cabelas. It's always hard walking out of there, the store is located in a beautiful area of PA.

I have been to both, Dixie is larger than Dixons but the Gunbuilders Fair the last full weekend of July at Dixon's is not to be missed. Chuck and Greg are very helpful. I have not been to Dixie since Turner Kirkland was still around, Dixie is a must go to if in western Tennessee.

Our BP League shoot is the first Sunday of the month in Old Bridge, NJ off of Rt. 516 and starts at 9:00 am for pistols. We shoot smoothies & rifles too! Let me know if you're interested. More on Dixon's : Every time I drive to PA. I swear that my neck gets a little redder as I cross the State line. My first stop is Dixon's, aka the Altar to the God of BP :bow: . Next stop is Cabela's for all of the obvious reasons. Then I go back to the same Rt. 78 exit as Chuck's and make a left at the stop sign and hit Dietrich's Meats & Country Store. They sell everything smoked but the "oink" :haha: . Don't forget to pick-up a PA. dutch wet-bottom shoo-fly pie :winking: . I call this excursion "the Red-Neck Trifecta" :rotf: :rotf: .

I just bought my son a Leatherman possibles bag from Dixon's (last trip doin the "Red Neck Trifecta"). He LOVES using it .

Our club members plan a trip to Dixon's for every gunmakers fair in July...well worth the trip :hatsoff: .

Here's the man himself, that's Chuck waving. That was taken a few years ago at the fair.
Just to show you what nice people they are there I couldn't find a nipple wrench for my Bondini target pistol I had so I asked Chuck if he had one, he didn't have one in stock that would fit so he took a standard rifle wrench off the shelf, took it back in his shop and spend 20 minutes filing and grinding it to fit. And didn't charge me any extra.

For those interested, the actual shop is the wooden structure on the right hand side of John's picture, the tent is just one of about five that are set up for the "gun makers faire" and there are other venders etc set up on the hill behind the shop. You can find n purchase just about anything related to BP at the faire and the seminars ,put on all day long, for all three days, are just not to be missed. They cover just plain all sorts of subjects from horn making to Native info, to leather work, to gun making in all its facets, beads, well you get the point. The faire is always the last weekend in July and usually hotter n blazes with a little rain tossed in for fun. It has ALWAYS been worth the trip and is no problem spending the entire day occupied somewhere, whether shopping or listening to seminars or just plain chewing the fat with friends, the Soviet Socialist Taxation Republic of Pennsylvania has some redeming qualities :blah: n Dixon's is one of them YMHS Birdman

I remember Dixon Muzzleloading as the little shop in the summer house on the farm over near Hawk Mountain. Then the cow shed converted into a gunshop.

I try to get down there every couple of months, it is a 3 hour drive for me. During the week is the best time to go, few customers and I can talk to Chuck for hours. Gregg handles the gun business and Chuck is there to help out the customers and share his knowledge. Chuck has been writing essays on his thoughts about "The Journey" and Soul Developement. Maybe he has a book planned for the future. To me, Dixon's is the Mother Ship for black powder. :hatsoff:

Sitting over here in germany I´ll probably never get there.

If guys like you and me could find out what treasures are standing in those gun racks on the pictures they would probably sell more...

My sister was born in Augsburg, Germany. To give you an idea, you walk through his shop and there are the usual production guns in racks but as you look up over your head there are hundreds of beautiful custom made guns everywhere. Back of the store has wood and barrels for making your own, there is every accessory a guy could want, knife making stuff, colonial stuff, etc. Give em a call if you want something special. :winking:

I was stationed in Bamberg back in the early 70's.
You really see some works of art pass through that shop. Guns built by some of the great builders. There is a smoothbore hanging in the back with a orgional doglock! He wants $2400 for it..... :hmm:
