I purchased a Lyman .570 mold 1.5 months ago. I received it and it was a .535 mold With .570 stamped on it. I sent it back right away and am still waiting. I've called once a week since then and all I get is "that Dept is backed up. We'll let you know when we get to it". I am steaming mad to say the least!!! What the hell happened to that company!!!!

It's sad to say but Lyman probably is no longer a viable option for good quality goods at fair prices.

OK...so you have been waiting 1.5 months for a replacement mold. Is that correct? The first thing I would do is check with other suppliers to see if you can get it elsewhere - Track of the Wolf comes to mind. If you can find it, then call Lyman and ask for a refund.

You may not be aware, but most makers of firearms and accessories are slammed right now, thanks to the nationwide fear that the government will continue to attempt to limit or eliminate ownership of firearms. That has created unprecedented demand for anything related to firearms. I suspect that is why Lyman is unable to provide you with another mold immediately. As for the mis-marked mold you received that is a problem but in large companies these things happen. Hopefully they will make it good for you.

Lyman is an old line company with a strong record of quality and service. I have owned and used many different Lyman products and have always been satisfied. While you are upset about your issue, and that is understandable, your situation is no reason to ask others to abandon a manufacturer with which they have had good service.

What the hell happened to the company? Porbably hired someone with their pants half down and a finger in their nose. Look around! Been to dunkin donuts, burger king, mcdonalds? piss poor work ethic and no pride, thats what happened. :shake:

Did you purchase it directly from Lyman or did you buy a Lyman product from somebody like Track of The Wolf or Midway USA? The opening of the thread was unclear.

If you purchased it from a supplier, and then sent it back to the manufacturer that's where the problem started. If you bought it from a supplier then you should have sent it back to them and asked them for a replacement, or a refund if they had no more in stock. Then try someplace else. As was mentioned in another reply to this thread, the manufacturers are backlogged with orders going to their suppliers/retailers. A warranty usually doesn't include a turn-around date... which sucks..., but that's true for most companies.

You get what you pay for. I wouldn't be breaking my back if I was getting the minimum wage either. We all want cheaper but whinge when it breaks or there is no customer service. There is a steady push to handle customer service by email so I am not surprised people aren't getting satisfaction over the phone anymore. The beauty of email is it creates a paper trail - no "I said", "he said" later on.

This Lyman bashing is getting a bit old. They make a good product TO A PRICE. You want perfection? Pay for it. Negativity is a contagion that unfortunately spreads much quicker than positivity. I had an issue with a Lyman lock and received one in the mail in no time after I sent them an email.

As usual a vocal minority drowns out a silent majority.

Lyman does not put the mould size on the outside. That is a model number. Lee does the same. I dunnow why. :idunno: It is super irritating and pointless, IMHO.
Before sending back I would check against the web site to make sure it is the wrong size.
Lyman is a solid, old and reliable company. There are ways to contact any company. There must be a reason you haven't had a reply. If you paid with a credit card, use that to cancel the charges and shop elsewhere or go to another brand.

I have to say that although I do not hesitate to buy older molds from Lyman, I will not longer buy their new products.

Over a year ago, I bought one of their rifle molds. It came to me .002" undersized and almost two months after they received my money. I contacted them and they said to send it back for replacement.
That was done, and then for 8 months I continued to contact them to see where it was. I finally had the mold back over a year from when I had first ordered it. I cast some bullets and discovered that it was still casting .002" under size. As you can imagine, I was less than impressed. I contacted them and expressed my displeasure and they replied that it was "within their tolerances" and there was nothing further they could do for me. I had to have a machinist enlarge it for me at my own expense.

From what you describe it sounds like your mould is fine and you were experiencing alloy shrinkage did you actually measure the mould cavity? or just cast balls?

Lyman centerfire molds are sized to cast to the correct size with their #2 alloy.

Using the same alloy as #2, my other molds cast to the correct size.

#2 yes but different alloys will cast differently. if you are using scrap lead you have no way of knowing its composition.
having a roundball mould cast undersized balls is common that's why I always used swaged balls for competition.

The Lyman defenders are overlooking the fact that Lyman's quality and customer service has gone down hill in EVERYTHING they sell and this has been going on for a couple years. So the Sandy Hook/gun ban buying spree defense does not really apply here. Their BP firearms, reloading presses, dies, sizers, powder measures, scales, etc, etc all have either been made with cheapened materials or made in a very sloppy manner. That said, this is true for virtually everything a consumer can buy now a days. Old names no longer can be counted on for quality goods. New names pop up all the time, then almost as fast disappear from the market place due to the junk they dump on the consumer. It's a very sad state of affairs.

I do wish that Lyman would get their act together and return to the days of good stuff at a fair price.

I traded for a Lyman mold, it cast a really lopsided ball, .528 on one side, .535 on the other side. I contacted Lyman about the problem, they didn't answer back.

I suspect the guy I traded with knew it was a lemon and pawned it off on me but.....

When I ran out of Lee mold cast balls the other day I shot a group with these lopsided balls just for laughs. 82 gr of 2F, .18 ticking patch and the dang things almost shot through the same hole at 50 yards, go figure, don't guess I will be looking for a replacement for my lopsided mold anytime soon.

Eric;
The barrel is lopsided too which is the only way it would shoot so well. You just have to make sure to load it with the lop on the correct side every time and do NOT use lop-compensating-patches as they will offset or exponentially increase the counterbalance side of the centrifugal lop.
