When I took on this fowler restoration, I swore I'd reuse every original part if possible.

But this butt plate seems awfully tiny at 4-5/16" tall x 1-1/2" wide. Measured several of my other guns. Nothing that small. My Ithica M49 has a bigger butt plate. And it's a slender rimfire.

Maybe it started a little bigger and got worn down over the centuries. Or reshaped into a boy/small man stock.

Would you guys use a butt plate this small? Weigh in the concept of keeping as many original parts as possible.

Thank you.

I see where 58 caliber posted a "Jokes Anyone" comment, but I wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot ramrod as it's probably that English Soccer tired not-funny joke that keeps popping up.

I started with an M49, and still have it.

This is a good place to insert the first line of "Baby Got Back," but I haven't measured any of mine. The widest I have is on my MTCo MNEF. It's comfortable.
