Do you like to do butt stock area detail using a vice or on a bench?

When ya got a chunk of wood to start with it will take lots of position moves to get at the work. Excluding barrel and RR work I do most of the build with a stock on the bench in some fashion or another.
#1 This is the chunk I started with
#2 Is a makeshift cradle that sits right next to the installed BP
#3 Butt stock clamped on cradle with cloth cushion and line of work placed
#4 Two detail lines after cut in
The forestock lays on a soft/hard rubber portable knee pad to keep the stock parallel with the cradle and bench.

I have a great big mechanics vise and I use it for inletting ALL the items. I am not even

careful until the shaping takes place and for that I use a high speed sander/grinder with 32 grit sanding belt.

Many years ago I visited Bill Shipman to ask him for some help building flintlock rifles. When I saw how he works I was surprised. He had a rifle that he was working on, and it was laying on top of two sawhorses that had a 3/4" plywood board with a large piece of heavyweight leather on top. He had a TV mounted in a corner toward the celling where he would watch some of the Phillie's ball games when he took a break from building. This room was his rec room in his house.
