Does anybody hunt with a "Hammer Stall" ?

Does anybody hunt with a hammer stall?

I am pretty green, but I bought a hammer stall for my Caywood and found it is too thick and the flint pushes the frizzen forward just a hair at half cock, so the pan cover is very slightly open. For this reason, it won't get any use in the woods. I do think they are a good idea... maybe I'll make a smaller one myself with some old boot leather I salvaged.

"TG" posted a tip on that issue in the past...as an alternative to leather, he suggested making one out of a piece of soft brass as it would be much thinner

I have also read that cutting the fingertip off of a thin leather glove would work well and not be as thick. Have not tried it myself so don't know.
I made a hammer stall out of old boot leather, it is required to have one at some reenactment events. I used it a couple of times hunting, but like was stated above, it was just a bit too thick and held the frizzen open ever so slightly and allowed the prime to sift out.

I usually keep mine one when hunting. Mostly just because it's tied to the trigger guard and I'm so used to it being there from all the reenacting that I do.

Still, I guess it's a good idea and I use it.

I cut the finger off a leather glove, and it works ok. This is my first year hunting with a flinter, so I am picking up all kinds of hints from this forum, and other places on the net. i have yet to pull the trigger, but hope to get into the field agian later this week.

Hammer stalls are tied to all my flintlocks. It's the closest thing to a safety a flintlock has.
Both in the woods and out I use them all the time.

Ditto, agree with your summation. Tied to the TG, it is always there to be used.

I have them attached to all three guns that I use. I found that my rifle's tiny siler lock couldn't use a hammer stall with regular leather, so I made one using very thin deer hide... works great, and will probably take about 10 hits before tearing. :results:

Ditto on the deer hide. I sewed mine with the artificial sinew, and used a strip of deer hide to attach it to the trigger guard. It isn't fancy, but it works very nicely for the intended purpose. :thumbsup:
