Double Set triggers

I hope I'm in the right forum for this question. Last week I won a T/C Renegade 54 cal off an auction site. I bid on this because about ten years ago I picked up a 20 gauge barrel that fits a Renegade/Hawken stock. I had bought a stock when a gun shop was closing it's doors. I was going to build up a shotgun. But the price of the trigger and lock put me off a bit and I was working so many hours that the whole project was put aside. I finally decided buying a gun was an easier way out and sold the stock last month. The T/C I won is in transit but I have never had a gun with set triggers before. My question is, if I use the 20 gauge barrel can I just use the rear trigger to shoot it? I know someone out there has the answer so help me.

The front trigger, yes but will be very still trigger pull. You can adjust things a bit to help, but will still be stiff.

Walkingeagle, thanks for your timely response. I'll just have to tinker with it to see what happens. I was told I could remove the front trigger and it would shoot like a single trigger but that didn't sound right. Money allowing I may just try to find a single trigger. I have a T/C New Englander perhaps that trigger would fit. I'll check it out when the gun arrives next week.

The front trigger is THE firing trigger for most guns although there are other types of dbl triggers. Normally the rear simply "sets" the front trigger for a light pull and can be adjusted using the screw in the tg between the two triggers.

No. Removing the front trigger will not work. The rear trigger is the set trigger and only turns the front trigger into a hair trigger if you will. You'd still need the front trigger to fire the gun.

My answer would be to swap out the double set trigger for a single trigger assembly. Shotguns IMO are better suited for use with single triggers especially in hunting scenarios.

In your Renegade, you have a double lever trigger, which means the front trigger can be used set or unset. Try the front trigger only to see how hard it is to pull the trigger. I believe the trigger plate on the T/C New Englander single triggers is too short to fit in the Renegade.

Grenadier, Thanks for your input. You are right about the New Englander trigger assembly. I looked at the L&R website and they have two different length single triggers. I'm going to measure the trigger plate to see if one is a close fit.

TC made a single trigger assembly to replace the double set ones, I put one in my Renegade years ago.

You can polish up the trigger bar and have a pretty nice front trigger. My hawken front was really hard to pull until I polished the trigger bar then is got as smooth as silk and much lower poundage.

You can see how rough the stock trigger bar was on the end I didn't polish;

Its not just the length of the trigger plate that has to be taken into consideration. You have to weigh the relationship of the location of the fulcrum pin in the trigger and the distance to where the trigger lever strikes the sear lever. You want that distance to be about 1/4" to 3/8".

Why don't you just adjust the set trigger so the front trigger has a heavier pull. I can adjust the double trigger on my Hawken so the front trigger needs a good pull instead of being a hair trigger.
Why reinvent the wheel? Just something that might work without swapping any parts.

Eddie2002, that might be the way to go in the end. I thought with the shotgun barrel on and at half cock, I could set a heavy pull front trigger and be ready to go unless the front trigger cannot be set at half cock.

Eric, I'd like to find a T/C single trigger for it but they are scarce. I read in another forum that the T/C Black Mountain Magnum single trigger was a drop in for Renegades & Hawken but they must be just as scarce.

To all, does it do damage to the set triggers to only use the front trigger without setting it? If not then that is how I will use this with the shotgun barrel.

You won't hurt your triggers by using the front trigger only when unset.

I think it'll be fine to just use the front trigger when shotgunning, the trigger would still be lighter than the trigger on my unmentionable 12 ga.
Since you're unfamiliar with the TC double trigger I thought I'd mention that the screw in between the triggers to me is "backwards" from what you might think. Turning it out makes the front trigger lighter when the set trigger is used, and turning it in increases the pull.
If you like it out a ways for a light trigger when bench shooting like I do, then a bit of blue Loctite is a good idea. My first one fell out while hunting and I had to replace it.

Grenadier,Renegadehunter,All. A big thank you to all who have jumped in. Since this is my first ever double set trigger gun, your help is much appreciated. The rifle came yesterday. The front trigger breaks about 4-5 lbs unset. That is fine for the shotgun barrel. For the last 45 years all my front stuffers have been single triggers, so this will be an adventure.

A couple of rifles I shoot have such nice triggers that I normally use them unset. My smoothbore with single trigger is wonderfully crisp and light.

hanshi, thanks. I think I will being using the trigger unset. My luck I would forget and just pull the rear trigger and wonder why my gun didn't go boom. The shotgun have been using has a nice pull also, very little creep before the hammer falls.
