Will the Lyman Great Plains Barrels work in the older CVA Mt.Rifles? I know the lock would have to be modified for the patten breach since CVA uses a drum and nipple but other then that will the lugs for the keys line up and what about the rib under the barrel where the thimbles go, will it be proper length or will I have to cut it a bit. Anyway, thanks for any help ya'll can give me. :hmm:

I already have the gun, I just need a barrel for it. I wonder if it'd still be best just to ship it off and have it bored out to a 54cal smoothbore. :hmm:

Is the barrel rusted beyond hope? You might try steel wool or fine sandpaper on it and see if it will shoot before having anything done to it. I put a slotted tip on the end of a long Brass range rod and then put either sttel wool or the sandpaper through it and use it like a Long brake cylinder hone. Might give it a try.

I did the 0000 steel wool treatment on it and it's still too far gone to do anything with. I started honing it out with a shotgun cleaning rod chucked into a drill motor with sand paper attached but I've only gotten about the first 4" of barrel worked out smooth. I really think a good gunsmith needs to ream it out to make it work right.

That's a shame. The Mountain rifle was the best gun CVA ever made i think. Would like to find one of them myself. I had a few of them years ago and let them get away. Would like to find another one in good shape.

I sent CVA an email questioning the availability of Mountain barrels -- also the price.

I'll add their reply to this thread if/when I receive it.

Scroll down a tad when you reach this site. Not sure how reliable/honest the sellers are. Calls it 'unfired' -- yet he says it's a great shooter.

Go figure!

CVA Mountain Rifle for sale.

Dont know what might change with it, but will call the people that made them after CVA stopped and will let ya know if they got any, they are at Friendship this week,or you might pick up one on Ebay (not that Ive had luck with them). Fred :hatsoff:

mountain hunter is a spanish barrel twisted 1:48.

like the ad said...unfired, but its also a good shooter and hunter.
go figure!

I like the idea of having it reamed to a smoothie!

I have the theory that if my ML bullet is not spinning or going far due to it being a smoothbore, I reach for my shotgun instead.

If I ever buy a smoothbore ML barrel, it'll be a 62-cal. I guess it all depends on what size animal you're going to use it for - plus how far you plan on being away from your prey.

Poster Roundball has a thread going on the difference between a 62 and 54. I tend to agree with him.

I believe that CVA used barrels from a variety of sources including Douglas. It is a hit or miss proposition. I have found that their locks are also quite variable in quality in that some parts wear out rapidly due to improper heat treating. I tried to keep some of these functioning for a youth shooting group and they were a lot of trouble.

We have one in our family from my grandfather and it stays on the wall.

I could always just get another 15/16's barrel and have the breech plub, drum and nipple put into it plus I can have the tendons, sights and rib and thimbles fitted to it also. I wonder what a gunsmith would charge to do that. Heck, I could even have em' make it a 40cal to play with or bump it up to a 54cal. :hmm:
