Paper works great in smoothies. The op can go down to .595 in his larger bore and will likely get good performance. The old timers never recorded using patches in the old days... Though I think that shooters of smooth rifles patched balls, they used wads for a reason.

Now, by chance, I am shooting a .65 cal rifle and have a 0.63 mold for that. If you want, I would send you a few balls and you can try these out of your smoothy. PM me if you are interested.

In my opinion, the Indian gun manufacturer just uses metric tools (remember, only the US uses SAE). If they use a 16mm drill, that would end up to be a 0.6299 = 0.63 barrel. This is a standard common size and "affordable" drill bit, if you go a 10th millimeter higher, the caliber would be 0.6338 inches, but that drill bit would be much more expensive. And I think a micrometer is not the right tool to get the caliber right.

Metric drill sizes are available in any decimal point brother. Bad boring will however need more honing and polishing!

And then there are industry tolerances on drill bits as well....and that also applies to SAE sizes.

I only know of one shooter who uses a dry patch in a smoothie. He uses a dry felt wad under it. He needs a mallet to start the ball.

Every dry patch I have tried smoldered.

Well, not to let this issue smolder, went to the range this morning with .610 balls, .020 patches and 50grs BP. At 50yds, shooting only 5 times, 3 bulls! Still more work to do. BF
