I think the period films come out in year cycles. My opinion it started with Drums along the Mohawk, Jeremiah Johnson in the 70's, I even liked Mountain Men with Charleston H. Then we saw Last of the mohicans with DD Lewis, The patriot which got dumped on but I liked, Black Robe. Any more I missed? I think we are due for another.

The Revenant was a good movie. I found a copy at a local flea market on dvd for a $1. I had a friend who does not have cable, who watches cowboy movies on dvd. I bought it for him, gave it to him last year.
A year goes by and I see him again (he lives in another town). I asked about the flick and his response was he had never seen it.
Oh well.

You could put "Across the Wide Missouri" with Cark Gable on that list as well.

Happened to find a movie last week on Roku that had a good cast and decent storyline “the way west” with Douglass, Mitchum and Widmark (a young Sally Field too).

Cute as a dang button.

My wife and I were camping near Roswell, NM in October. We tend to hit the thrift stores when we travel, she's looking for local arts and I look for cheap DVDs for rainy days. Picked up a copy of the 2010 version of True Grit. Odd thing is that the movie has non removable Spanish subtitles and an occasional watermark that pops up on the bottom of the screen saying Property of Paramount Studios. Movie was OK but I hope the Coen brothers got remaking John Wayne movies out of their system.

I thought the re-make was more realistic, but you can't beat True Grit with the Duke
