I think the period films come out in year cycles. My opinion it started with Drums along the Mohawk, Jeremiah Johnson in the 70's, I even liked Mountain Men with Charleston H. Then we saw Last of the mohicans with DD Lewis, The patriot which got dumped on but I liked, Black Robe. Any more I missed? I think we are due for another.
My vote goes to Centennial for the best MM movie

First time I saw the original True Grit as a kid I remember being surprised that the aging Wayne could still get on a horse. I was even more skeptical about Bridges being able to mount a horse unaided.

Black Robe was one of the most depressing films I've ever seen...

Yep, but still a good movie. I had a long talk with a Chaplin Army captain at Fort De Chartres. who was playing the part of a Jesuit we both agreed that Black Robe and the Mission were our favorite for the genre.
Me too. I liked the unsentimental cold view of things. Raw and real feel to them. No director heavy handedly trying to move my thoughts and emotions. If they were actually trying it was subtle and in my case hardly noticed.

Just rewatched "Ride with the Devil". I think the movie came out in 1999. Good story about the border war in Kansas and Missouri during the Civil War. I think they did a good job with the accents and the period clothing. Difficult to identify the good guys or bad guys in that conflict. Plenty of atrocities were committed by both sides.
