After using some APP & Goex duplex trying to break in my Lyman GPR, I took some BH209 that I had used sucessfully in my CVA wolf. What I had found in my CVA wolf was the Clean cold bore shot using BH209 was the same as the 2,3,4 5 shots, The POI did not move mutch like using white hots. Plus no swabbing.

Well, the APP/Goex Duplex seemed to be the same but the groups were bigger than with Goex and Swabbing.

Today I used BH209 & Goex 2f Duplexing.
First shot was in the middle of that main group, so was the last. This group was better than my so far best Goex load, but I will admit I have yet to completely work up a load for both. I may have just stumbled upon these loads so far. But I'm happy with it right now till I try it at 100.

I'm pre-measuring at home and placing them into these plastic vials for quick loading.

What are your duplex proportions?

Doesn't BH209 specifically say their product is to be used in a closed breech system only?

According to the manufacturer: "Blackhorn 209 was specifically designed for modern in-line muzzleloaders with sealed ignition systems using standard 209 shotshell primers."

Why even discuss it here?

15grains (by volume)Goex FFG
50grains (by volume)BH209

BH209 has more UMPH per volume than BP so be careful with using it.

I measure the weight of 10 loads by volume, come up with the average weight, then weigh my loads.
50 grains by volume of BH209 is something like 35grains by weight (I have the exact # at home). So if you don't discover the ratio and you weigh out 50 grains of BH209, you will not be doing yourself a favor. I will also take an extra one of the loads and dump it back into my volumetric measure at the end and verify its right just to make sure I was not screwing myself.

I did the same with Goex for the comparison of my best Goex 2F load. My best Goex 2F load is 70Grains by Volume. But Goex 2F is pretty close to 1:1. BH209 is definitely not 1:1 And if one can't understand what I'm saying, one probably should not be weighing charges.

CCI #11, No ignition issues.
No hang fires or any delays on ignition.
But only shot 6 rounds so far.
Hope to shoot more next week.

I had zero issues last couple wees with the Duplex of APP so long as I ran a nipple pick before capping.

I have had a few failures to ignite the Goex but only when I swabbed too wet.

That's real interesting. I have no plans to use the BH209, but I sure want to know how if the day comes when I have no choice.

As a matter of fact, when I was in our local shop yesterday, he had Pyro RS and BH209 and nothing else. Guy traveling here or someone living here and out of powder, just might wish he knew the right way to use an alternative. I'm thoroughly jinned up on the Pyro, but need to learn more on the BH209.

You've already given me a good leg up, and I appreciate it.

Guy can climb as high as he wants on as tall a soap box as he can find for real black, but when there ain't none, there ain't none. That's pretty regular in large swaths of the country. I'd rather know how to use the things that are available than quit shooting.

The naysayers can give a thumbs down opinion all they want. For me, I have no immediate plans to ever use Blackhorn, but come the day, I'd like to be prepared to use an available propellant, no matter how historically incorrect it may be.

As already indicated: when there ain't no more, there ain't no more [black powder]. With the hordes of spoilers from California invading and settling Texas and Arizona, and bringing their socialistic attitudes about firearms along with them, it may only be a matter of time until what we now take for granted becomes hard to find.

I've shot a little of the blackhawk 209, and was less than impressed. I much prefer Triple Seven if I'm going to play with subs. American Pioneer was like kitty litter and the 2f wouldn't go through my flask. I agree with Brown Bear, we all need to know how to make these things work if we can't get the favorite brand.

Well, its running pretty consistant that I'm happy with it right now.
Here are 5 and 4 round groups from today. Had a cease fire on the 2nd group and had to leave to work.
Both are @50 yards from the bench and same load.
No swabbing between any of the 9 rounds.

Thanks,
BTW, the sound of the BH209 is not the same as BP. BP yeilds more white smoke too. I much prefer the sound and sight of BP over the BH209. But seems every time I ask for BP locally, I get a shake of the head NO. BH209 is plentiful around me except just before the ML deer seasons.

Had poor accuracy @ 100 yards and bumped it from 15/50 to 15/60 and much better @ 100 yards. Very flat trajectory. I did not adjust the sight from 50 to 100 either. Center of groups @ 50 was pretty close to the center of groups @ 100 yards.

I don't have pics but the BH209 is very consistent. Looks like an extruded hollow tube smokeless powder.
