I don't use AF but instead use Dangler stains in combination w/ other Dangler stains.
I use ammonia to neutralize browning and would use on AF if I used it.....just brush it on and forget it. A lot simpler than a baking soda paste.
Normally am not too concerned about "popping" the curl because it can be a distraction. Achieving too much curl contrast can border on "gaudiness".
