I have been doing re-enacting for several years, one thing i have watched observered is the different types of shelters, what are you views on a tarp with triangle sides sewed on. it is basically a whelen. bucktale

Most Dog Soldiers at a rendezvous will ignore your tent as long as it is white canvas.

I have a book called "A Voyage up the Minnay Sotor" where a British nobleman in the early 1800's made a trip from Green Bay Wisconsin to up the Minnesota River to see the Sioux tribes.

When he was in Green Bay, he had a sailmaker make him a tent to his own design. I think that as long as your tent is of a simple design, you may be as authentic as that long ago nobleman.

The wedge is always more easily authenticated than any other tent. Depending on what you are trying to portray, you may want to do a little more research.

my take on this is that it goes grom being a tarp/lean-to to a purpose-built tent. and if I were going that route, then the wedge is the most practical Purpose built tent I can think of.
Check out this website:
More Tarp Tents. Can't make authenticity claims, but this site does show some interesting variations on tarp manipulation.

Our opinions mean nothing. The opinions that matter are those of the jury committee of the event you attend.

At a rondy you may be able to use anything you can find as long as it is not obviously plastic in some strange color.

At a historic site or more strict event you may run into problems due to not checking the registration materials first. Most of them give fair warning in their registration packets.

I am with the others here. Why bother?

You can set up a tarp as a plow point diamond shelter and have a very efficient structure. It is good cover and easy to set up. It can be done with only one pole and a bit of rope. A lean-too is going to require several poles and a good bit of line, or trees in just exactly the right place.

If you are putting sides on a tarp it is just as easy to make it a more efficient wedge tent, which will give you no grief anywhere you go.
