I've had some cartridges and tried the concept in a ML. If you get the cage just right, it does work. However, I could not get it just right consistently and so it was either a spreader or a slug just as often as a nice pattern. The cage was in ML's and made its way into early cartridges too.
 
I use a paper shot cartridge made of three thickness of news paper. I have found that less than three thickness they tend to fall apart when being handled, more than three they tend to give a "slugging" effect .
