I have been busy playing around with my elk hide that I just recently got back from the tanners. Here is a new possibles bag as well as 2 leather cappers and a "bullet stick" for holding PRBs for quick loading. That's an elk antler button on the bag.

...and I also used some of the hide to make a leather wrap for my rifle stock and attached it to a sling made from an old belt.

ive been thinking of saving the hides of the deer i kill this year to make into buckskin and rawhide. always nice to reuse parts of animals you have killed.

Wyoming, Give it a try. Lots of fun. Here are my leather projects after rubbing in some Snow Seal to protect and darken the leather.

Very Nice work. I am also working on some hair on elk hide possible bags. Getting the layout and pattern made.....I like the style You have made....

Excellent work. I rolled out a couple of fringed rifle cases and couldn't be happier. Everyone I shoot with wants one too, but I tell them to get their own goshdarned elk!

scraping the hide is lots of work but i used the tanning solution sold at cabellas and got good results if you do not want to wait for a commercial tanning. i shudder to think of all the hides thrown out every year. the tanners often will gift you some nice gloves or mocs if you get a hide to them while it is still fresh

Rick, I cut the barrel down to 18". It seems to be more accurate than I am. I took a deer last week at 85 yds. so I guess it'll work. I still need to shoot it at longer distances and see how it does.

around here during hunting season there pickup box trailers around town that you can take your hides and they take and have them tanned and made into gloves and stuff for vets at the VA and the homeless shelter and stuff.

Cascade ya may want to rethink leaving the hair on those elk bags. Elk, deer n several others will shed unmerciful on ya. The hollow hair breaks up n off n can make a mess as well as it really starts to look ratty real quick n not in the well used, older bag sort a way. Have had several elk hide rugs over the years and ended up getting rid of them because of the shedding. Probably could have scraped them clean n used the leather but didn't think of it at the time.Something made of FUR will last a long time such as bear, fox, beaver etc but hair well I'd give it a second thought, the decision is of course up to you. just some thoughts YMHS Birdman
