Nice bull, but is that a :cursing: inline or metallic cartridge gun :shake: !

spitfire, I have no idea what kind of gun that is, and I really don't care. I just thought I'd post the picture to make folks on here aware of an opportunity to hunt (by drawing) some very nice elk here in KY.
If you are lucky enough to get drawn, the weapon you hunt with is your choice...centerfire rifle, bow, or muzzleloader.
Sorry if I offended you, but I really don't understand (or care) why you would be offended by what I posted.

i knew of elk in KY but what would it cost fer a non-resident....we have elk draws here in PA too....i have bout 3 in fer PA but bout 30,000 people put in fer 40 tags, 30 cow 10 bull so the odds are big of not getting fer a few years maybe....once ya get drawn ya have to wait some years before ya can apply again.............bob

Bob, if you are drawn you gotta buy a NR license for around $120, and the NR elk permit is $300.
200 permits were drawn this year.
Here's a link to the KY f&w website with more info:

Here's another link with pictures from this year's hunt.

The Dyer guy in the fourth picture is a friend of mine. We played HS football and graduated together. He killed the elk about 15 miles from my house.

I was at the butcher shop the other day, and they were whooping it up in the back because an employee had bagged an elk in Colorado and was driving it back to Louisville, KY. There's no way to get one here I told the guy behind the counter, and he agreed. KY only introduced them a few years back, and they have a lotto system to get a chance for a tag. Never tried Elk, how is it?

Rebel,
I have never harvested or hunted elk but
I have eaten it, and you are right it is
awesome.
snake-eyes :hatsoff:

Was that elk really shot in KY and also do you have any real mountains there? I hunt Rocky Mountain elk in the Rockies {Colorado} and the diet of these elk yields a superior meat which is much better than the meat from "lowland" elk. :rotf: Just kidding....we have an elk herd in Wisc. but it's not large enough for a season as yet because the timber wolves and cars are trimming the herd. I don't begrudge the wolves making a living, but the cars are another thing....Fred

Yes, it really was shot in KY, and
Yes, we do have some mountains here.
The highest point in KY is over 4100 feet---not the Rockies, but some pretty good hills. :winking:

I'd like to have a couple hundred pounds of that sub-standard elk meat so I could decide for myself. :haha:

If you dont draw a tag do you get a preference point for the next year? How long does it take to get a tag?I saw a show where a guy was huntin elk in Kentuky.Nice lookin country.

Nope, no preference points.
We just put in every year and hope for the best.

Yep, it's nice country, and the elk seem to be doing fine here. We lose a few occasionally to brainworm, but there's no CWD here, at least not yet.

I dont think that herd is stayin where it is supposed to.

I own a fair piece of acerage in Northern Ky & this summer I was tooling along in my gator & saw a deer shaped animal running through the woods. It was WAY to big to be a deer. I found the tracks & they were 5" long.
Called Bobby the local DNR guy & asked him about it. He said there was no way for a elk to have made it up here...

I am inclined to agree with him but ya never know?
