You are sneaking up a hill and just before cresting the ridge you hear a cow "bark." You freeze, but what to do next?

Game over? Sit tight? Try a call? Keep moving ready to shoot? I don't have an answer, but what would you all do?

I would circle around (out of sight) until I was down wind of the elk and then ease up over the ridge until I can see the elk clear enough to get a proper shot.

I don't hunt elk much, mostly moose, but because the elk cow MADE or HEARD something, she challenged & you have to cow mew to her to let her know what you are. Doing nothing will 'arouse' suspicion even more, as she only 'knows' SOMETHING's out there. Mewing will let her calm down so you can either get around the cows, or in answering back, you might find out if a bull is present.

Meow. No worries, elky types, just us kitties here. Meow!

If a cow barks you have to think quick because thats their warning sound and at that moment every set of ears in the herd is looking for you . Either turn and walk away , this alot of the times will settle the herd and you can then sometimes make another stalk on it or if you think your real close then quickly cow call

Capchee, Does this whet your appetite. Just took this picture on Monroe Mt. near where I live.

Utah, Only 5 or 6 miles from my house, as the crow flies, but about 15 by the road. Hard to draw a tag there though.
I drew a cow tag about 13 yrs. ago but no bull tag ,yet.
How about this one, a 7x6. :: looking closer I think there's 8 on the right side.
