What's the concensus on elk versus venison (deer)? About the same, one better than another.

Having eaten a lot of both, and both are good, I feel broiled whitetail backstrap is the best meat anywhere. Any opinions to the contrary will be considered blasphemy.

They are equal... the same as chicken, pork, and beef are. Elk tastes like elk venison like venison and its all good to me.

crockett,
They all taste great to me,but!! Cooked
properly,I prefer black bear. But,to each his
own.
snake-eyes :hmm:

Sort of interesting answers. To my limited exposure elk and venison (i.e. deer) taste about the same. Just wanted to know what others thought. I haven't yet have moose, caribou, or antelope. The only black bear I had was so so, to start the ribs were great- always eat the ribs first- but the rest, like the shoulder wasn't so good. On black bear- those of you who like it, did you shoot a spring time bear or fall bear? Mine was a spring bear, maybe a fall bear or at least a bear in late spring- in the process of putting on pounds- tastes better, I've had other folks tell me a bear they shot tasted great.
I still don't think anything (including beef) outshines buffler but then I still haven't had dog yet.

I prefer the venison, to me it has a bit of game taste to it where the Elk is milder in flavor.I do not care for ground venison unless made into salami, sausage or has something else added to it other than juist suet.

Think it depends on whether you shot it for meat or horns. I can tell you from personal experience do NOT shoot a bull caribou in the rut if you expect good eats. Shoot a cow or yearling, much better. Think the same thing goes for most everything else, a cow elk makes for some good steaks, same thing goes for a young bear or a spike buck. I guess all things being equal, though I'd pick bear as the best eating with antelope as a close second.
I've heard cougar makes some pretty fine eating, too, but never had the oppurtunity.
For crockett: All my bear have been taken in the fall.

That's interesting, anyone else out there have experiences with how Spring Bear tastes versus Fall Bear? I always opt for the Spring because it's the only kind of hunting you can do at that time (except turkey). Maybe fall is the better time to get a bear.

Personally, I have a strong preference for elk over venison. I love good venison, but to my taste, elk is just far superior.

Im not too particular, but Elk and venison are the berries.
Wont touch little brown crane (tastes like swamp) and only eat crow when I have to...

Keep yer powder dry,
D.

I have eaten a good bit of wild game. Young Buffalo is awfully good. I killed a Mule Deer last fall and thats not bad. The worst I have had was cougar sausage. I dont think there is any spicing that could save that stuff. No animal with any sense eats cat! I rest my case.
