Any one know where to get engraving patterns suitable for patch boxes ?....I bought the little booklet from Muzzle loader supply, But I think it leaves alot to be desired, I'm looking for something that is dang near perfect, not something I could have drawn myself.

Wallace Gusler once told me, "Find a gun you like and try to duplicate it." Look through one of Shumway's or Whisker's book for photos of patchboxes. Alternatively, go to a show and photograph (no flash) patchboxes (with permission) for patterns.

Remember that engraving on American long guns did not reach the fine art of the Europeans. It was basic engraving that was an additional selling point in a competitive market. You don't have to try to create a roccoco masterpiece for your first attempt.

James Meek book on engraving is well known and I've used it for scrimshawing powderhorns. But I'm waiting for one particular book. John Schipper hopes to get his book on engraving out next spring. I'm in line for my copy. :imo:

Harp,
Got a picture of your patchbox? Any ideas what you want done to it?

SP

No, I am still in the learning and deciding phase, I got my engraving on the lines, But its only as good as my lines, and that booklet just isnt that good. I would try to improve on the drawings but they are even out of proportion.
I also am still waiting on my carving chisels, but I found some decent drawings for that, that I can use to practice with.
Soon as I get this engraving and carving down I will decide on the Gun I will build, I am still looking all around and taking my time on that decision.

hey harpman, a great book i use is by chandler and whisker
titled kentucky rifle patchboxes vol. 2, old bedford press
1992. i have both vols. the first real hard to get and
very exspensive, but vol. 2 around 45.00 dollars.
