I have a Minie Ball sizer from Dixie Gun Works. Uniformly sizes Minies to .575. Since my Enfield takes a .580 Minie, how can I carefully open up this sizer to .580?

Thanks.

You need a service that can open your die by .005 or more. You can start with :www.greybeardoutdoors.com.Go to the section: Ask Veral Smith.
next try www.beartoothbullets.com. Post your inquiry in the cast bullet section of both. In fact, you should slug the barrel with an slightly oversized egg shaped fishing sinker with a hole in the middle. Drill out the hole to allow a screw to go through to attach to a sturdy cleaning rod. Tap the cleaning rod so the well lubed sinker will start down the barrel and then pull the sinker out. You will have an exact copy of your barrel interior. The bullet needs to be .001 or .002 oversized. Since you minie ball has a skirt I would think the .001 would be adequate.

Archer, I'm sure you really meant .001-.002 Undersize? Right. Scalplock, It may be cheaper to buy another sizer. Is this for a lubrisizer type setup or just a die you put in a vise and push the bullet through with a dowel? Uncrichie...

Have you fired minies from the sizer to see how they perform? Maybe nothing is needed.

You can hand lap it in a drill press or other device that will spin the part (lathe, mill, etc.) Get a roll of emery cloth around 240 or finer grit and lap it with WD40 as a cutting oil. Be careful because this will take material off pretty fast and you don't want to remove too much.

Anvil,

The rifle won't group worth a hoot with a Minie sized down to .575, a .577 isn't much better. The Minies I have come from a shooter that has a Rapine Minie .580 mold. He pushes them through a .580 sizer to make sure they're uniform. I tried them and they were just what the doctor ordered. My bore must be a bit over .580 diameter. :grey:

Scalplock, I would just buy another die in the size you need. Reamers can get alittle on the expensive side unless you have further use for the one's you buy. I wouldn't imagine that the type of die your using would be more than $8-$10. Without the right equipment its hard to get a uniform cut of .005" and over without a lathe. It can be done but doesn't seem worth it when the prices of these dies are so cheap. Uncrichie...
