When I make a rod it is usually a half inch longer than the barrel for a little better finger grip. It doesn't seem to bother the gun, the things I shoot at and God knows it doesn't bother me. I have originals with rods from 2inches longer than the barrel to an inch shorter than barrel length. Work for an antique dealer when I was younger. Yours is fine just use it.

Whelp… tonight I attempted to add a brass tip to the bare wood ramrod of my trade gun.

I THOUGHT I made the measurements correct, but it ended up being much too short:

As you can see, the end of the tip is not flush with the muzzle. It’s bothering me tremendously. I fear I’ll have to make a new ramrod from scratch because of this.

Does this kind of stuff bother anyone else? How bad/off does this look to you?

Looks just fine! If the ramrod extended beyond the barrel it would look odd.

Are you kidding? It’s fine. Hell, I have my rods stick out some to have extra grabability. You’re never going to be happy

The length wouldn't bother me, it looks just fine! What WOULD bother me is the gaps of the stock around both sides of the brass ring.
Exactly… I wasn’t gonna say it…the ramrod certainly seems within the tolerances set by the visible hardware.

When I make replacement rods, I concentrate a lot more on grain runout than aesthetics. I don't want it to break and run through my hand. Puts me in a bad temper for the day.

I do try to get the length flush with the barrel, and then screw on a 1 to 1-1/2 inch cleaning jag to have something to grab hold of. I don't recall the extra length causing a problem in the woods, but it could if you're not aware enough. Worked for me for a few decades, but float your own stick.

I don't think I have a single muzzle stuffer that the ram rod exactly matches the muzzle of the barrel.

All that matters is it long enough to do the job?
