I find that old cotton towels that have been used until they wear out are real good. One thing to be aware of, a lot of modern fabrics have fire retardant in them. We used to swear by charred cheesecloth and then all of a sudden we couldn't lite it with a Bic Lighter. One of my buddies called the factory and found that they were adding fire retardant.
Fire Retardant is now in anything kid related like PJ's, blankets and clothing, so avoid using that. They also put fire retardant in Macrame twine, that used to be a good fire starter, but not anymore.
Dishtowels and tablecloths at an antique store or a garage sale probably don't have fire retardant.
