Favorite Targets?

Punchin’ paper is fun and all and great for load workup, but I’m curious…

What targets do you all shoot at? Mushmellons? Steel gongs? Cans of spoiled butter beans?

Or, something else entirely?

The public range I use specifies paper targets only. Since cardboard qualifies, I usually use cardboard boxes. I get them for free, can get various sizes and can easily set them at various distances. A 6 inch square cardboard box makes a dandy target past 30 yards. Other than that I shoot at random things like sticks, pine cones, dirt clods, etc.

I like steel for fun. For paper I tend to make my own targets that are particularly suited to the reason for shooting, eg., size distance etc.

In the fall I like to shoot hedge apples. There is an osage orange tree in the woods behind the local high school. I walk back there in October/November and pick up the "fruit". Then I take it to my local gun club and place them on the berm. They do blow up nicely, and they are 100% bio degradable. I throw what left after shooting back into the woods. Maybe new trees will grow someday.

I prefer reactive targets. I have swingers that are the size of clay birds that I use for 50 yard offhand practice targets. I also enjoy woods walks and silowets. For me paper is for sight set up that’s about all. BJH

I shoot paper targets that I print out, but I always bring along two or three water filled milk jugs, gallon, one quart, two quart, they're all good, when they go up you get audio and visual! I also like those targets where the hole turns orange or green, I'm just too cheap to buy them.

Steel gongs, water filled bottles and walnuts in the fall. Like 11thCorps I used to shoot Hedge Apples on my Grandfather's farm. Picking off walnuts and Sycamore balls out of a tall tree with a .22 was great fun. The area was sparsely populated and the mountain behind was the back stop for a missed shot. Now for safeties sake I use a high powered air rifle for such aerial targets.

I like to hang potatoes from a string at various distances using a wood screw to put thru the potato. Potatoes come in various sizes and can be hung a various distances. Instant gratification when one is hit.

I like the Birchwood-Casey Shoot-N-C targets. They're sturdy and can be pastied multiple times before they're done. They're also sold at Walmarts. Scheels used to carry them and now they only carry the Allen line of "splash" targets and they're not nearly as good. The outdoor ranges I have passes to only allow paper user-supplied targets. Two have some gongs, but they do get pretty badly shot up, and not often replaced.

Inexpensive paper plates for me. They are about the kill zone size of medium game so if I can keep all shot in them it should work on game. If I'm fine tuning sights will draw a cross on them with a magic marker.

Paper, tannerite, dum dums candy, eggs, AR 500 plate, rocks, clay targets, rubber/plastic, plastic or metal containers filled with water, old fruits, veggies

I like extremely reactive and loud steel gongs like this one
