Feeling like a Drugstore Cowboy

After spending a few weeks now on the muzzleloading forum and reading various threads and comments I am beginning to feel like a drugstore cowboy. I was really proud when I got my Pedersoli frontier rifle with a 39 inch barrel and 50 caliber, and finally had the opportunity to make it go bang. Then some thing in the back of my mind kept saying flintlock, flintlock, flintlock, flintlock……! As I read about what powder to use I’ve kept hearing in the back of my mind Black Powder, Black Powder, Black Powder…… The word Pyrodex seemed to have a drugstore cowboy ring to it as did percussion cap!
Always wishing to be a purist and to do things right Thursday I expect that my Hatfield flintlock rifle be be on its way to Texas!
During my younger simpler life I sand up to ride a bull. I didn’t get drawn because they were more Cowboys and bulls. I tried once again at the cypress Fairbanks rodeo. I didn’t get drawn because they were more Cowboys and Bulls. I finally determined that I wasn’t supposed to ride bulls, however I’m going to ride this flintlock when it gets here!

I tried Pyrodex probably 40 years ago in cold weather and it didn't work well for me. It was hard to light even in a percussion gun in the cold. It did work pretty fair in warm weather and didn't foul much at all.

Greetings to you dialcannon. That is a great idea to go flintlock. Just be sure not to use Pyrodex as it does not ignite well in flintlocks. Use real black powder for a flintlock. For 45 caliber and below use 3 f anything above that 2f suits it well. Your flash pan will love 4f for a faster ignition. Have a great day!

Back in the mid 80s I used pyrodex in my .45 cal. TC Hawken with a maxi-ball. This was before I knew better but it worked quite well and I even took a Texas whitetail. Lots of learning back then by reading because there were no forums back then. Besides, personal computers were just starting to be avaible.
Take your time and learn from the folks on this forum or other sources.
Pyrodex may be all you can find so go for it and enjoy the learning.
There are a bunch of guys here in Texas if you need help. Many way more experienced than I am.

So true, except for me they all get used even the less expensive ones. They all have their own shooting characteristics so feed them accordingly.

I have many I haven't shot in years but still enjoy just getting them out and holding on to them. I shoot the gong guns and muzzle loaders regularly in our monthly shoots but have some big game rifles I haven't shot much at all.
Lead ball and bullet shooting is what I compete with and occasionally a few jacketed bullets for caribou and bear when hunting season rolls around.

Pyrodex won’t work in a flintlock as above, but I’ve got cans of the stuff.
If you prime with black, and throw 10-15 grins black down the bore you can use up the nasty stuff.
My wallets never been fat enough to tolerate throwing away stuff I can use

I had percussion but now I have flint. I shoot 40, 45, 50 and have an order in for a Kibler 54. You never go back. Good to see a Texican go to the light.

Some of us have been doing this for well over 40 years and it's just a whole lot of accumulated knowledge and maybe just some trivia.. . I don't think Pyrodex was even on the market when I started muzzleloading. The availability of real black powder wasn't an issue then, so I've just gone with that, I don't mind cleaning my guns.
Anywho, the higher ignition point of Pyrodex doesn't work well with flinters, but for caps, it's fine if you choose to use it.

Thank you for that info. I ordered Black Powder from Toby in Claude Texas. Got the 2F. I do not have any for F. Figures!
