I've heard of useing felt wads to help control patch burn through with heavy hunting loads.

What kind of felt is it. In my head, I have a vision of felt from my sorrel sno-pak liners.

So pointers to what and where would be welcome.

There are several hardness levels of wads that I've seen. Some are semi soft, and some are quite hard. Think of the felt polishing bobs for Dremel tools. I prefer the harder wads myself.

You can get felt and punch your own wads much cheaper than buying them. Durofelt.com is a good place to get the felt. You can also get vegetable fiber for wads. It seems to hold more lube and clean the bore better. You can get the veggie fiber at buffaloarms.com or anywhere that sells vegetable fiber gasket material.

As an alternative to a felt hat, I use Oxyoke prelubed Wonderwads with all my hunting loads...most ML supply places carry them, Cabelas probably does too

Thanks for the two good links. I'm planning on punching my own since between unc and I we shoot .54, .58, and .62 . I saw the vegetable in .030 and .060. The hard felt can be had from 1/16 up to way too thick.

Any idea on what thickness I should use?

The felt I'm using is about 1/4 inch thick or so. Durofelt has it marked specifically for black powder use. I got that because I didn't know which to choose either. It's worked fine for all my guns so far so I haven't really tinkered with other thicknesses, other than having tried some premade wads.
