I must have missed shop class on this topic. So ~ How does one take care of metal and wood files when not using them? Do you clean them with a steel file brush and apply DW40 or other preservative? Should one dust with chalk for storage? What’s a good method for storage if one cannot “Hang” them?

By rights they should be in file racks so that they do not bang against each other. If you cannot do that, then put them in drawers or something similar that has some old short nap carpet in the bottom, again in some order so that they do not contact each other.

I hang my bigger files & use a drawer with a rubber matt in the bottom for the smaller ones. :winking: WD40 on a file will lead to faster clogging when using the file and to excess dust accumulation if the file is hanging. In my experience, WD40 is fine for things like hoes & axes (so is kerosene & cheaper) but if applied & left for a long time on small moving parts (gun actions, fishing reels, etc) you will get a gummy buildup as the stuff slowly evaporates. CRC56 is much better as a long term lubricant/moisture barrier (no sticky residue if left for months). If humidity is an issue, try a dehumidifer.
