Where can I get a cross cut bastard file and what is the file called that you use around the outside of the lock mortice to kind of round it down. There was also something called a cheese grater that the guy in my video ran down the stock to take some wood off.

Most builders use a rat-tail file for shaping the area around the lock plate. The cheese-grater device that you referred to is called a microplane. They have a web site from which you can order. They are relatively reasonable in price. They really work great and remove a lot of wood in a hurry. I have two but broke my round one when I tried to staighten it out after I bent it pushing too hard (my fault).

The Bastard Cut file should be on the rack of your nearest hardware store as will be the Stanley Surform(Cheese Grater) The other file I think your mentioning is a rasp. I have a 4 cut combination,my grandson loves that one, You can get one at the Hardware store as well. If they mentioned a Nicholson #50 they are around $35-40 bucks and you can get them at a woodworking specialty shop.
I highly reccomend that one, it's hard to beat!

Check on Ebay. There's always alot of files there. I like to check at older hardware stores in small towns. They seem to have a better variety of quality files. Those cheese grater files can be found at Body Shop suppliers or sometimes in your larger home stores like Lowes, Home Depot etc.

About the best files you can buy for shaping a stock and taking a lot of wood off fast are the #49 and #50 Nicholson Cabinetmaker's rasps. They are made differently than a normal wood rasp in that the teeth are not set up in straight rows, but have an alternating tooth pattern. They are flat on one side and round on the other and really hog off the stock while leaving a relative smooth finish to the wood. A standard wood rasp will leave a very rough finish with lots of tears and splinters. They cost about $35-$40 each, but will last a lifetime if you take care of them.

Of course you will still need some other files for the final shaping and smoothing of the stock before scrapeing or sanding.

The microplane can often be found in hardware stores where they stock knives, and cooking tools. I see them in " gourmet " shops all the time. They use them for grating " zest " off oranges, and limes, and lemons. Whatever.

I have found more useful files and screwdrivers at pawnshop/junk stores than I can shake a stick at. Before I started my last pistol build I dropped by my local junk store and came out with about a dozen old wooden handled screwdrivers and files of various dimensions for $4.00. A few ended up being junk but most were in excellent condition when cleaned up.

i've been partial to microplane which is a rasp/plane. they got their start in the woodworking tool industry, but the company really took off when a woodworker's wife swiped his tool to zest an orange, or somesuch. she was so taken with the gadget's performance that she took up his suggestions that she get her own %^&* tools and leave his the ^&*! alone...

more foodies than rock heads means a competitive company for us sawdust makers.

Jamestown Distributers has #49 Nicholson rasps on sale right now, mighty good price, $31.
