First week of flintlock here in Pennsylvania was fun and also frustrating. I learned quickly that I had not practiced enough with the flintlock, because I missed several deer at rock throwing distance, like 40 yards. One was a doe I missed three separate times with two different flintlocks. Missed a buck on a deer drive.
This morning I was set up on a big buck I had patterned since seeing him last August. Screwed up during rifle season because I had a flu and bumped him out of his bed while I was sleep walking. At 7:15am today he showed up walking his trail, but his antlers were gone. I ended up taking him broadside at 35 yards. His teeth are almost completely gone. One hoof is weirdly damaged. His one hindquarter looks like he bounced off a car. Not an ounce of fat on him. Dang he looked good with those “horns” on just weeks ago. Sigh….

Thanks for the encouragement, guys. And I appreciate the advice. Definitely need to practice more with the flintlock. No other rifle goes 💥 in your face. In years where we have practiced a lot, my son and I have videotaped each other, and we are totally on the followthrough. I’d hate to see a video of me shooting now…flinching like a little girl

Old deer there. you done him a favor probably would of not made it through the winter. If you know his bedding area search it, you will more than likely find his sheds.
I hope you are right about giving him an easy way out. The challenge with the sheds is a power line right of way crew is due in his bedding area soon. They will probably find his sheds before I do
