Haven't posted in a long time, but with school out for the summer went out with the rifle finaly and did what(after reading about it here) I thought wouldn't happen to me.

Jammed the ball home. Put the cap on. Took aim. Small bang, nothin. Hmmm maybe hole is plugged with fouling. . .then it hits me and I check the powder measure--oh wow still full with 90grs. Ouch and me showing off too :shake:

Things like this usually happen when other folks are watching.

I hope you remembered what you read here about how to fix the problem. (hint, hint: remove the nipple and work as much powder down into the barrel as you can, replace the nipple, cap and POOP, the ball goes bouncing downrange.) :)

Ya I had remembered that from here as well, However felt little uneasy about doing it. So put the screw tip on the rod, and pulled the ball out instead. Luckly it came out with two people pulling each way.

Yea, I felt nervous the first time I dribbled in some powder to pop out a ball,
but by the third or fourth time it got a lot easier.

Whether the problem is a forgotten powder charge or just maybe didn't dry the bore quite enough after wet swabbing between shots... no one likes that sickening silence that means something has gone wrong. It's not a matter of IF, but WHEN it happens...

The best thing I've ever tried that I (previously) had thought was just a "neat gadget", is one of those little CO2 cartridge powered removal units. It's quick and effective and I felt a whole lot safer doing this than trying to pull the ball off a "fouled charge".

I think these things sell for around $25 or so, and best of all... IT WORKS!

Sorry if I sound like a commercial, but this dang thing really does work. I was fortunate in getting a "free test" while shooting with a friend. My gun went "pop" and I borrowed this CO2 device from my friend. It was still new in the packaging and I got to "break it in". It wasn't long after that I bought one for myself.

Regards, and shoot safely... always!

This is the kind of thing that you can laugh about afterward but is down-right emabrrasing when it happens. I wouldn't loose any sleep over it because as I said "WHEN" it happens, not "IF". This has happened (or will) to all of us, and usually when there is an audience about.

It has never happened to me, YET. I have loaded without popping a cap though, and it was on my wifes rifle. boy was she mad when a nice Whitetail stopped 20 yards from her and all she got the snap of the cap. I will never forget again, until next time at least. LOL

I got a chance to try my CO2 discharger out , after having it for over 2 years . Too much Bore Butter in the barrel when I loaded :nono: , 3 caps , no boom :shake: . It worked like a champ  .

with a t handle on a good range rod you invert the gun after you've driven your screw puller into the ball, hold the t handle with your feet and pull up on the rifle...dry ball comes right out easy...I am a three time dry baller...or is it four :hmm:

If you have a T-handle on your range rod you can pull the ball yourself. Just put the T on the ground and stand on it and pull...Next time I need to remember to wipe the bore first. Removing the nipple and packing powder in there with a pick works good too. Dont ask how I know all of this...

I loaded my first ever dry ball last summer while working up some loads in my TC New Englander 50cal. Tried pullin it with the range rod and T handle by standing on the T and it didnt budge. Wound up using some rope and tying it to the T and bumper on my truck to get it out. Was using a tight patch/ball combo and it was a booger to get out.
