I went to a shooting competition with a local club that I'd never met before. After the competition, one friendly member let me shoot his flintlock three times. This was a new experience for me.

I shouldn't have done that! Now I'm hooked.

He had years of experience and of course his fired perfectly every time. It's nice to find a community of folks that know all the mistakes and can correct mine.

You're lucky that there are enthusiastic BP shooters in your area that you can shoot with.
Up here in the wild and wooly north they are few and far between .
However shooting flintlocks is it's own reward and highly addictive as I'm finding out .
I haven't had so much fun for years .

Awesome my friend. Your right. It is addicting...............and rewarding!

Indeed! My tutor had already shot in the competition all morning - probably 50 shots or so and his hands were completely black; as if he'd been working on his car engine. The shoulder of his shirt was grimy from where the rifle went against it.

And he was very happy. As were they all.

Wow, they were good shots!

GPR - a little tweaking here'n there and it makes a fine and capable shooter.

You haven't asked about which rifle would be the best for your first rifle .... but you've been thinking about it, and you WILL ask pretty soon.

So, there's the answer, already awaiting your inquiry

Better go oil up your center fire guns ..They will start to get dusty!
Do your homework and shoulder as many flintlocks as you can.
Take your time ..You'll be happier in the end.

This club has some pretty hard-core people in it ”“ I did not see a single store-bought gun. Everyone who showed me his or her gun had either built it or knew who did. As a result, this is a great group to hang out with to learn from. Two guys had .72 caliber guns they were shooting (which I had never heard of before). The rest were shooting common sizes - .45 or .50.

They were hard to find - they've been a club for over 55 years but it's always been word of mouth only. I'm lucky they invited me back!

Congrats!...My mentor was this keyboard...
Your learning curve will be much shorter..
You are in a great position.
Remember..silence is golden while reloading!
Won't belong now you'll be scrounging lead,visiting fabric stores,ordering round ball molds,working with leather,horn,wood...
Do not impulse buy,get some books, study, study more..lots of history out there to consume....
The wife might even notice your giddiness!
Tip- use cash....No paper trail....
Keep it fun....Enjoy....dan
