Looking for opinions on finish for hardware on CVA mountain rifle. All hardware is silver metal color, not brass. I polished the butt plate to 1000 and buffed with flitz. It's pretty shiny. But I would like to deer hunt with this rifle and shiny doesn't work. I plan to rust brown the barrel.

Depends if it's plated steel or bare steel . I kind of like a dull/matte finish of the "silver" parts, but some options are cold blue or browning ,which could also be tuned to a rust blued finish. This assuming it's no plated, in which case the plating would need removed first.

A satin finish looks really nice. My build is also nickel silver and I’m gonna do a very fine satin finish on all the furnishing and a worn back cold blue for the barrel and am gonna leave the lock a bare satin steel finish to patina over time on its own.

Try some maroon Scotchbrite to satin the finish. Or if you want more gray, cold blue the steel then maroon Scotchbrite until you get the gray you want.

All the above suggestions or try one of the heat browns like Birchwood Casey Plumb brown. You can apply more coats to darken, or buff with 0000 steel wool to blend, lighten or remove it if you don't like the finish.

Thanks,
O.R.
