I have an original 1851 Navy Colt. 36 caliber. It belonged to my gggrandfather who was in the 17th Indiana Volunteers, Wilders Brigade. Years ago my father tried to clean it up and sanded the grips but did not finish them. He also sanded the stock on his Spencer Carbine. What kind of finish would of been on them?

5 parts tung oil and 1 part urethane. (not Polyurethane). Urethane will give the finish durability. If it ever gets scuffed or scratched it's easy to fix. Make sure no grime or oily stuff on the wood. Lightly sand the wood with 400 grit paper before you apply the finish with the first coat. Wait a few minutes and wipe it off with a clean rag. Keep applying additional coats every 5 to 6 hours but make sure existing coats are not tacky before you do apply additional coats.
