I finished my first home made powder horn today.I capped it with some apple wood and made a plug with a dowel and 44 mag case.

Nice grain in that apple wood. I have some Cherry from a blowdown i will be using on mine..

thanks for the kind words every one. This apple tree was planted by my grandfather like 50 years ago he was killed by a breeding bull before I got a chance to meet him.I had a custom open reed pred call made from it to its has a lot of spalding in the wood came out nice.

I also have a 30 year old osage tree growing here next to the river in CA I know weird isn't it.I sold some to a local long bow maker.I want to make a top from it next time.

Ratslayer, I like apple wood also! ___ Now that you have made your first horn and it sounds like you might make more. May I suggest that you get yourself a copy of, "RECREATING THE 18TH CENTURY POWDER HORN", by Scott and Cathy Sibley.

TOW sells them and is a good book about powder horn making and should be in every horn makers library!

I will look into that book. There is no way I can do the art like some of you I am not sure how well I can even make the spout. All I can do now is cap them here is a smaller one in osage wood I really like this wood.
