Does anyone know of a way to calculate the finished weight of a rifle based barrel and wood type and style of rifle. I am not looking for exact weight only an general idea.

How do, Journeyman. Dixie has a chart in the back of their catalog that gives weight-per-inch on barrels of various calibers and contours. I wish I could help you with stock and furniture weight, but I don't know enough yet to make any generalities on those items. I'm sure others here will chime in and offer guidence.

Density of the wood can vary greatly in the woods. I have seen such a difference to over a pound on duplicated rifles, but one soft maple & one very hard dense maple.

However, if you tell us what you are wanting to build & the barrel length, caliber & Class of barrel (A,B,C,D wgt) of swamped or size across the flats on a straight barrel, type of wood, some of us may have built one similar & know a weight close. :m2c:

Hey good to hear from y'all,I am currently working on a poor boy in .45 with a 13/16 x 44 inch straight barrel.I am using one of John Eders small waterproof ( resistant) flintlocks and am using black oak for a stock.I am hoping to get it down to 6lbs or less.I guess I am not too concerned about this project as I am about the rifle I am planning to build after this one. I was thinking about building a western styled .75 cal, full stocked in hard maple but with a wider butt. I guess the best way to explain it is more on the lines of a Leman and less Hawken because I am sure there must have been other builders of that period that did so.I am hoping to use this rifle on a future caribou hunt and I was hoping to keep it at a reasonable weight if possible and then realized I did not have a clue about what it would weight on average. Any thoughts?
