Browned the barrel on my GPR this weekend, came out GREAT the second time.........dont ask about the first.

The instructions say to finish the barrel with wax or boiled linseed oil. Is this step really necessary?

I scrubbed the barrel with the baking soda solution, and applied a light coat of rem oil to the surface, I have been watching it, there is no further rusting.

Would the finish wear off faster if I dont finish with the linseed oil or wax?

Thanks for the help, hopefully Ill have pics up before to long.

Thanks again

Boone

Do as ye will, but what I do is when I get em browned where I want, I leave em stand until I get the stock finished, and then when I put the beeswax/linseed finish on the stock I also do the barrel. I rub in the hot finish on the stock, and put the barrel in the oven and let er soak at about 250 over night. What I get is a finish somewhat like brown parkerizing. I have one rifle that is 20 yr old and it still beads moisture.

Are there any other ways to neutralize the browning? I oiled her up again last night, and got alot of rust on the rag again. I thought she was all done. I guess not.

Thanks

The only thing I use to "kill" the rusting is household ammonia. Tried baking soda and always had some after rust....none w/ the ammonia....Fred

I do the strong baking soda wash 3 times and have had no problems.
You may want ot heat the barrel before you put the oil on to open the pores a bit before you put the oil on.
