Ready to carve my JP Beck rifle from TOW and have been experimenting with finishes. Currently have Laurel Mountain "Lancaster" stain and it seems too reddish and light. The wood on the rifle is a very plain maple with very little figure so I will carve it a little more than planned as well as adding few inlays.

Has anyone ever tried Tried and True oil vernish on a stock? We use it on furniture a lot and looks-wears-protects well.
Thanks in advance .....

berry,
LMF Lancaster Maple stain is a bit red and alittle amber at the same time. Pretty typical lancaster colors.
You can make the wood any shade that you want, (almost black) by putting more coats on. Until recently changing to Ferric Nitrate, (still having trouble putting acid on all that nice relief carving, and them heating it up), I've used exclusively LMF stains on all my stocks.

It's a very, :applause:good, ::product. :m2c: :thumbsup:

How many coats of stain have you givin it ? If only once try what Smallpatch said and apply another coat it should darken up Tru oil is good on gunstocks I have used on 3 or 4 modern guns and a flint . Do this for your first coat mix 50/50 tru oil and mineral spirits this will act as a sealer for the wood because its thinned it will get down in the wood better then apply staight tru oil for your top coat, how ever many coats you desire . Good luck :thumbsup:
